There is a tonne of information out there with rankings and reports. I have spoken about the Fraser Institute quite a lot on my website. I have actually used the Fraser Institute reports and ratings to identify the best schools in Mississauga. Now, there are obvious limitations to the report – limitations which led me to do some of my own homework.

More recently I have been analyzing the EQAO results that the Peel Board provide to the public. This information really is fantastic. It's definitely not the "be all and end all", but it certainly provides some very interesting insights.

A couple of things I want to highlight:

  • The results take a look at three very important criteria: Reading level, Writing level, Math level.
  • The report looks at two grades individually; Grade 3 and Grade 6.
  • The highest level that a child can achieve in both grades is a 'level 4'.
  • The percentage provided in the report is the number of students who have achieved either 2,3,4 OR 3,4.

How I will be analyzing and presenting the data for you:

  • I am only taking a look at those schools that have achieved 70% and above  in levels 3,4 ONLY, for Reading, Writing, and Math.

The following is a table of results for the best schools in Mississauga at Grade 3 level (Alphabetical Order):

SCHOOL READING WRITING MATH TOTAL (/300%)
Burnhamthorpe P.S. 72% 83% 82% 237%
Credit Valley P.S. 77% 84% 84% 245%
Edenrose P.S. 71% 78% 80% 229%
Ellengale P.S. 79% 88% 88% 255%
Hawthorn P.S. 88% 88% 94% 270%
Kenollie P.S. 86% 95% 100% 281%
King's Masting P.S. 80% 80% 76% 236%
Lorne Park P.S. 81% 72% 88% 241%
Middlebury P.S. 78% 84%  87%  249%
Mineola P.S.  78% 83%  74%  235%
Oscar Peterson P.S.  72%  83%  80%  235%
Plum Tree Park P.S.  75%  83%  86%  244%
Shelter Bay P.S.  78%  75%  78%  231%
Sheridan Park P.S.  84%  90% 88%  262%
Tecumseh P.S. 95% 95%  95%  285%
Trelawny P.S.  75%  85%  81%  241%
Vista Heights P.S.  87%  89%  94%  270%
Whitehorn P.S.  74%  86%  89%  249%
Whiteoaks P.S.  78%  82%  85%  245%

The top ranking schools here are Tecumseh P.S., Kenollie P.S., Hawthorn P.S., and Vista Heights P.S. One important thing to remember here is that some of these Elementary Schools only go to Grade 5 and so will not appear in the next table. A prime example is the great Vista Heights Public School (Also, incidentally not even being ranked by the Fraser Institute because of this very reason).

The following is a table of the best schools in Mississauga at Grade 6 level (Alphabetical Order):

SCHOOLS READING WRITING MATH TOTAL (/300%)
David Leeder Middle School 78% 79% 74% 231%
Ellengale P.S. 90% 90% 76% 256%
Floradale P.S. 82% 86% 75% 243%
Hawthorn P.S. 88% 81% 73% 242%
Hazel McCallion Snr. P.S. 77% 82% 73% 232%
Hillcrest P.S. 89% 90% 72% 251%
Kenollie P.S. 89% 93% 82% 264%
Oakridge P.S. 92% 88% 83% 263%
Plum Tree Park P.S. 85% 89% 74% 248%
Sawmill Valley P.S. 76% 80% 73% 229%
Sheridan Park P.S. 88% 77% 75% 240%
Tecumseh P.S. 89% 82% 77% 248%
Tomken Road Middle School 87% 86% 79% 252%
Westacres P.S. 82% 86% 95% 263%

The top ranking schools here are Kenollie P.S., Oakridge P.S., Westacres P.S., Ellengale P.S., Tomken Road Middle, and Hillcrest P.S. What is interesting is that some of these schools rank extremely well both at Grade 3 level, and at Grade 6 level.

So what does this all ultimately mean? Well, it's a very good indicator as to how well a particular school does in a particular year – but it's hard to identify which is truly and ultimately the BEST school because other grade scores are not given. The Fraser Institute uses these results to create an "FI" score – the scores you have seen in my previous blog posts. It's a good way to guage a school. At the same time, the schools that have come out on-top here are usually those schools that do have quite a reputation. A perfect example is Vista Heights Public School, Hawthorn Public School, and Kenollie Public School.

At the end of the day it's not just about what school your child attends – it's how much time the parent is spending with the child. Obviously the school provides an environment but it's important to provide a solid foundation.

What about the Separate Schools?  I guess they weren't important enough to include in your list.  Maybe none of your clients are Catholic.  Shame on you for being so closed minded!

  3. @Damien: Interesting assumption. To me, they are just as important – maybe browse the website a little more and you'll find some blogs on Catholic Schools :)

  4. You shouldn’t be! It’s a solid school :)

I'm curious about the EQAO test. Is there any way you could send a copy of the test to me?

  6. zeshan

We do not have access to the EQAO tests they are administered and tightly held by the boards of education. But your post has inspired me to at least try getting one in my hands publishing it and distributing it might be another issue :P
