Every year the Fraser Institute provides us with an updated rating list of all the schools (both elementary and secondary levels) across Canada. Many people, like myself refer to this list in-order to make a very important decision. As you are all aware, I have been blogging and updating my visitors about this list. I have even taken it a step further and tried to analyze the real estate surrounding each of the top 5 elementary schools in Mississauga.

The Fraser Institute have created these "report cards" for each school that contain their scores. The report card uses Grade 3 and Grade 6 EQAO test results to calculate each school's overall rating out of 10.

What makes the new  rankings interesting is that the Fraser Institutes new top 10 is very different from the previous years:

RANK SCHOOL FRASER (/10) – 2008/09 ENGLISH MATH
1 Kenollie Public School 10.0 A A+
2 Vista Heights Public School 8.5 A A
3 Thorn Lodge Public School 8.5 B B
4 Hawthorne Public School 8.1 C B-
5 Plum Tree Park Public School 8.1 A A
6 Mineola Public School 7.9 A- A
7 Sheridan Park Public School 7.5 A- A-
8 Cashmere Avenue Public School 7.4 B- B-
9 Miller's Grove Public School 7.3 C+ C+
10 Tecumseh Public School 7.1 B A-

This years list (2009-2010):

RANK SCHOOL FRASER (/10) – 2009/10 ENGLISH MATH
1 Kenollie Public School 9.4 TBA TBA
2 Tecumseh Public School 8.8 TBA TBA
3 Ellengale Public School 8.6 TBA TBA
4 Hawthorne Public School 8.3 TBA TBA
5 Sheridan Park Public School 7.8 TBA TBA
6 Plum Tree Public School 7.6 TBA TBA
7 Sawmill Valley Public School 7.5 TBA TBA
8 Hillcrest Public School 7.3 TBA TBA
9 Oakridge Public School 7.1 TBA TBA
10 Floradale Public School 7.0 TBA TBA

A couple of thing's to take note on the new list – Vista Heights Public School is no longer listed. The Fraser Institute only ranks those Elementary Schools that are from Kindergarten to Grade 6. Vista Heights is now a Kindergarten to Grade 5 school – in-turn, Dolphin Snr. Public School, which is the Middle School within the same boundary, is now a Grade 6 to Grade 8 school. I still consider Vista Heights an excellent school.

It is also apparent that some schools who still run from Kindergarten to Grade 6 aren't in the top 10 anymore — an example would be Thorn Lodge Public School who now have a ranking of 6.4/10 – a big drop from 8.5/10. Another example is Cashmere Avenue Public School that had a score of 7.4/10, but now have a score of 6.3/10. Miller's Grove School is now at a ranking of 6.1/10 – they were a 7.3/10 last year.

Look at consistency – this is imperative when deciding which school to put your child in. Some of these schools have been extremely competitive and their rankings/ratings have remained very strong for a few years whereas some schools have suffered a "yo-yo effect".
